 Troubleshooting common laundry issues

Laundry can be boring, and then there are laundry issues that you have to deal with besides washing, drying, ironing and folding. Your shirt’s colour could run or your jeans could shrink. You never know what strikes and when.

Here are some common laundry problems, which you can troubleshoot –

Discolouration

A prevalent issue indeed, discolouration could happen due to a wrong setting on your washing machine or using the wrong detergent. If you want to avoid turning your white clothes grey or yellow, then soak them immediately as soon as you take them out of the washer. Alternatively, if you notice discolouration in your whites due to sweat, then treat the stains with a stain remover or soak them in warm water before washing.

Detergent residue

Washing machine overloads commonly lead to detergent residue on clothes because water does not circulate among the clothes. For this, it is best to put your garments through a rinse cycle again to remove any remaining detergent. Symptomatically, you will notice that the patch is dry and detergent is stuck.

Wrinkles

When your washing cycle generates excessive heat and water, it can lead to wrinkling. While it might be impossible to resolve the issue, there are times when you could avoid it with the efficient use of your washing machine. Adjust the washing cycle or sort your clothes before adding them to the washing machine. You must also avoid piling your clothes and keeping them in the formation for a long time to prevent wrinkling.

Grease

Stubborn grease stains can be difficult to remove. If you put them into the washing machine through a prolonged cycle, it could damage other clothes. Therefore, you must pre-treat the stain with a detergent or specially made solution before washing clothes.

Shrinking

Clothes shrink primarily due to heat and agitation, and this effect also depends on the type of fabric being washed. Handwash the fabric and hang it to dry to avoid potential shrinkage. You may also want to check the laundry labels before you wash the fabric.

Shedding

Pilling and shedding could be a natural characteristic of the fabric, especially if it’s synthetic. Minimize the issue by using a gentle wash on your machine or regulating the water’s heat. Alternatively, it is best washed by hand and hung dry to avoid shedding and pilling.
